Cedar shakes and cedar shingles have been the predominant roofing material in the Northwest and Seattle region for several decades. These two types of cedar products are the most common, they present a similar look but are completely different types of materials. Both are cut from Western Red Cedar trees, but cedar shingles are sawn on both sides and thinner at the butt than cedar shakes.

Cedar shakes offer a very distinctive look that exemplifies the Northwest. A cedar shake roof still offers the best insulatory value of all roofing materials. Due to it’s organic makeup it is completely biodegradable and recyclable, unlike it’s competitors. We also offer maintenance programs for all the cedar shake roofs we install.

  • Heavy and Jumbo Shakes
  • Recycle All Tear Offs
  • Maintenance Programs Available

Cedar shakes are the most common in the Seattle area and surrounding region, they are hand split and come in 2 main styles: Medium and Heavy grade. The medium grade measure nominal 1/2″ at the butt, while the Heavy grade measures nominal 3/4″ at the butt. There is also a Jumbo grade that is nominal 1″ at the butt.

There has been a sharp rise in the cost of cedar shake roofs which has contributed to many Seattle homeowners looking for an alternative roofing product. There will always be a place for cedar shake roofs, especially for those that appreciate their beauty and splendor.  The one overriding factor in making a decision on a cedar shake roof is how many trees you have around you.  Not only will they dump organic material on your roof but they could be the fuel of a forest fire, which would make a cedar shake roof kindling.
