Deck Coverings
Vinyl deck coverings serve many purposes when re-doing the surface of an existing deck or installing a new deck. Its main purpose is to waterproof the below area of the deck. In new construction of multi-unit housing, there will be walk-out decks that must keep water from draining below the decks. The vinyl deck membrane is a great solution for this, as it provides a walkable surface that is easy to clean and maintain while giving the deck areas below it a completely waterproof deck over their heads. Another benefit of a vinyl deck over a deck coating as a form of waterproofing, is that you can install a vinyl deck during most seasons without compromising the waterproofing. Deck coatings have a very limited time frame in which an install will succeed. If it is not installed within the temperatures and ambient dew points, then the deck coatings can and will flash off or bubble up and peel away, causing severe leaking and dry rotting. Vinyl decks can be installed in almost any weather with a tarp covering.
The process of a vinyl deck can be a bit more expensive when you consider the type of plywood needed, or the amount of sanding and cementing of seams required, but in the long run they tend to perform better and longer than deck coatings.
